Find out how to make authentic Zimtsterne, a Christmas specialty coming from our beloved Alsace.
Step 1: Shortbread Dough
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, the almond powder, the sugar, the powdered sugar and the cinnamon. Add the 4 egg whites.
Mix with a spatula to form a smooth ball of dough. Roll out with a rolling pin to 1 centimeter of thickness.
Pre-heat the oven to 300°F. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out stars.
Arrange the zimtsterne on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 8 minutes.
Set aside to cool.
Step 2: Icing
Beat the egg whites until stiff using an electric mixer. When they begin to come together, add the powdered sugar in several additions. Add the vanilla extract.
Dip the zimtsterne in the icing. Allow the icing to set at least 1 hour before serving.
