The power provided by a blender depends on the model, but it can vary between 350 and 1,100 watts. The capacity of a blender pitcher (jug) can also vary (1–2 liters). This kitchen appliance is quite bulky, although manufacturers have attempted to reduce its size in recent years. When buying a blender, you are advised to choose one with a glass or stainless steel pitcher instead of one in plastic, and also with a metal base instead of plastic; your blender will be much more stable. Also choose a machine with different speed settings, which will let you vary both the power you use and the texture of the food. Power less than 500 watts could mean your machine will struggle to work with very hard ingredients such as ice. There are certain models that come with nonslip suction cup feet. These keep the machine from moving when in use.

Blenders have a great many uses. You can use one to make smoothies, sauces, crepe batter, soups, milk shakes, and to crush ice. You can also chop fresh herbs, fruit, vegetables, and even meat and fish cut into chunks.
